Kathryn Hahn returns to the MCU as Agatha Harkness in the first Agatha: Coven of Chaos set photos now that the WandaVision spinoff is filming.
Kathryn Hahn returns as Agatha Harkness in the first Agatha: Coven of Chaos set photos. The success of WandaVision as Marvel Studios’ first Disney+ show was so great that plans were put into place for a spinoff following Hahn’s evil witch, Agatha Harkness. The show was officially announced in late 2021 just a few weeks after the actress missed out on winning an Emmy for her hilarious portrayal of the character in WandaVision. The development of Agatha: Coven of Chaos has progressed well since that point allowing Marvel Studios to begin production on the series in early 2023.
The first look at Kathryn Hahn’s return as Agatha Harkness in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has now arrived, as Just Jared shared set photos of her and other co-stars filming scenes now that Agatha: Coven of Chaos is filming in Atlanta.
The Agatha: Coven of Chaos set photos show Kathryn Hahn in modern clothing as she is seen walking out of the set during production. It’s a departure from the majority of Agatha’s wardrobe in WandaVision due to its time period reflecting different TV sitcom eras. Other photos provide the first look at Joe Locke’s mystery MCU character and Ali Ahn’s character, who is also unknown. It appears that a birthday party scene was being filmed based on the hats worn and held by Locke and Ahn.
Everything We Know About Agatha: Coven of Chaos
Marvel Studios might have confirmed that Agatha: Coven of Chaos is coming, but most details are still a secret, in standard MCU fashion. It is known that the series will pick up Agatha’s story after the events of WandaVision, potentially showing her break free of the spell Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) puts her under in the finale. So far, there is no confirmation that Olsen is returning as Wanda Maximoff for the spinoff, but Kathryn Hahn is scheduled to interact with several other WandaVision actors. Most of the actors who played residents of Westview are confirmed to reprise their roles, including Emma Caulfield Ford’s Dottie. Aubrey Plaza is also part of Agatha‘s cast.
These first Agatha: Coven of Chaos set photos do seemingly confirm that the WandaVision spinoff will take place in a modern setting based on everyone’s clothing. They do not give any further indication to who Joe Locke’s character is. Speculation has mounted that he could play an older Billy Kaplan a.k.a. Wiccan, who is Wanda Maximoff’s reincarnated son in the comics. Since WandaVision introduced a young Billy Maximoff, Locke playing Wiccan could be another step for the MCU in building towards the Young Avengers. However, there are other theories that his character is Nicholas Scratch, the son of Agatha.
With Agatha: Coven of Chaos currently in production, the Disney+ MCU show should be on track for the late 2023/early 2024 release that Marvel Studios previously gave it. It is one of many Phase 5 shows expected to come in 2023 and 2024 as the Multiverse Saga rolls forward. Whether Agatha: Coven of Chaos has large of a role in the overall MCU story as WandaVision did remains to be seen, but Kathryn Hahn’s return as Agatha Harkness in a leading role should be plenty entertaining on its own.
